Nowadays I do my technical writing in LyX, a GUI front-end for LaTeX and it is quite wonderful especially the way it incorporates mathematical typesetting. The output is beautiful. There are many templates that might well work for your technical journal of choice.

But that's not why I'm writing.

As others have noted, you can still (2019) run FullWrite under one of the emulators. These things are amazing. Mini vMac, Basilisk II, and Sheepshaver. Installing them takes some effort but not too bad.

You can work just fine this way if you want. However, your best move might be to archive your old work. Just Print the document but in the Print dialog box select the option to save as a Postscript file. Yes, we could do that way back when, thanks to Apple's Mac underpinnings. If you want a PDF, open the file with with the free Skim app, the alternative Mac PDF reader. Save the file as PDF.

(If you need to run PowerPC programs on your Intel box, OS X after Snow Leopard did not include Rosetta, the PowerPC translator. So do this: Get Parallels or another virtualizer such as Virtual Box. Call Apple and pay $29 for a copy of Snow Leopard Server. __Server__. This can be legally and trivially run as a virtual machine under Parallels on macOS aka OS X. I just tried it on El Capitan, OS X 10.11.6, and it works fine. Can't remember if this is a link to FullWrite but I doubt it.)Jerryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10113898131386633778noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5710205.post-91809987341539627262019-02-11T22:00:37.419-06:002019-02-11T22:00:37.419-06:00Synology is a company based in Taiwan. Just use a simple old-school mail account. They are usually included even in the cheapest hosting plans. Another option is to use an additional free mail account, even Gmail …

I have a dedicated old-school mail account for device notifications. In addition, I use plus recipient e-mail addresses to distinguish between devices – if possible, some developers have still not gotten the, ehmmm, message that e-mail addresses can contain plus characters.

It is of course a - literal - plus if a device asks for an actual e-mail account. More 'modern' devices send out notifications through their own cloud backend. That is still not mandatory with Synology devices.

It is also a good idea to enable only absolutely necessary packages. Synolosy's softquare quality outside the firmware and some core packages is doubtful. Many third-party packages are clearly outdated. (I'm afraid I have a terminal case!)

When I was in university, the HP-41C was a suitable object of lust. I could not afford one, having already bought a TI-59 with the built-in card reader. But I was always an HP/RPN guy, having learned handhelds on a HP-35 and HP-45 when working as an engineering technician before heading back to university.

I owned a number of HP calculators over the years, they being my preference. The 48GX was my go-to unit for a couple of decades. But it's big and does not fit the hand well.

So... last year I bought my first HP-41CX and was hooked. Monte Dalrymple has an upgrade mainboard that will make the HP-41 50x faster and has almost all the modules on-board and soft-pluggable.

Three HP lovers assembled a firmware that can be uploaded to an HP-20b or HP-30b business calculator to produce the WP-34s. The 30b has a better keyboard and the process is not difficult.

I now use the HP-41CL (Monte's labor of love) and the WP-34s on a daily basis. These are my normal tools for quick calculations and estimates. Yes, I have computers for heavy numerical modeling, but I still prefer my hand calculators for routine tasks.

If you would like another rabbit hole, I also have Post Versalog 1460 and 1461 slide rules. One was from my university days and the other a replacement for one that got away. These are fascinating machines and mean that I could design even if we did not have access to computers.

Heh...

The iPhone application lives on my phone, too. ;)Ruminatorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02288251654036934824noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5710205.post-24020812397701630262019-01-24T11:34:40.387-06:002019-01-24T11:34:40.387-06:00Recently had a similar issue. At some point the "fetching" bug showed up..but only for one folder. All the files in the folder acted as though "write-protected". I wanted to edit a specific file, so I copied it to my Downloads folder. When I did this and did a "Get Info" on it, the permission was corrected..IE NOT "fetching". I copyied the file back to its original location..checked permissions..still OK..tried to edit..no go. So I copied the ENTIRE folder to Downloads..renamed the original "fetching" folder..then copied the folder from Downloads to the original location. Permissions corrected..folder and contents no longer "fetched" up. ;-)Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05566243984224783562noreply@blogger.com
